Story of Silba
Silba was founded in 1994 as a liberal NGO by MP Bertel Haarder and Ole Michael Rasmussen, two Danish politicians from 'Venstre'. The original idea was a Support Initiative for Liberals in the Baltic Area, hence Silba. The organization aimed to support the then new democracies in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the aftermath of their independence from the Soviet Union.
Later the name was changed to Silba - Initiative for Dialogue and Democracy, and the areas of focus amplified from the Baltic countries to all of Eastern Europe, and most recently, beyond the European borders.
Silba works with international partners who share the same democratic principles.
Today, we are a cross-political champion of dialogue and democracy,
and a cross-cultural community with local roots and global outreach. Our international work is twofold:
(1) Short-term election observation missions. (2) Long-term development projects.
Silba strives to promote democratic commitment, constructive dialogue, and civil liberties
on a local, national, and international level - in cooperation with likeminded partner organizations.
During the last 20 years, Silba has conducted more than 50 Election Observations Missions in 20 countries.
During the past year, we have initiated three new development projects around the world.
