Belarus KGB creative dealing with Polical Prisoners  Print

The need for the Belarusian president to improve his relations to the EU and at the same time to crush the Belarusian Democratic Opposition, have forced the KGB to deal with the opposition in more creative ways.

One of the key EU demands was that all political prisoners were to be released. The last political prisoner, Kazulin was set free during the Russian war against Georgia. The freeing gave Lukachenko new found goodwill in the EU, who in return lifted a long lasting visa ban on Luka and his friends in the regime for a six month period. The visa ban lifting is up for evaluation 15th of April 2009.

One of the few elements that would endanger a prolonging of the visa ban lifting, would be that new oppositionals were put to jail...

So for a while the KGB have limited themself to the usual 14 days adminsitrative imprisonnements without trials... and have in addition created a new way of solving the KGBs need for long period imprisonnement of the key oppostionals...

In stead of putting the oppositionals to real prisons... they are forcing them to enlist into the regular Belarusian army as soldiers...

At the moment, Ivan Shyla, (Young Front) and Franak Viachorka (Belarus Peoples party) is serving their prison sentence in the army...

Those that knows the Belarusian army, would perhaps prefer to end up in real jails...
